National Album Day 2026: The Gigantic Team's Album Icons — Hayley Williams, Radiohead, Elliott Smith and more

Saturday 17th October 2026

Picked by the Gigantic team

National Album Day returns on Saturday 17th October 2026 for its ninth edition, and this year’s theme is Icons: a celebration of the artists and albums that have shaped popular culture, from long-established names to the artists defining the sound of right now.

So we asked the Gigantic team a simple question: which album icon would you put on first? The answers range from alt-rock trailblazer Hayley Williams to the intricate art-rock of Radiohead, and genre-defining Oasis to punk pioneers The Stooges and beyond.

Some of these artists are still on the road. For the ones who aren’t, we’ve picked out artists touring now who carry their influence, so you can put the record on and then hear where that sound has gone next.

Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party (2025)

Hayley Williams

"It's been a long time coming... but I feel as though Hayley Williams is finally receiving the widespread recognition she deserves: as a truly generational icon. It's been over 21 years since Paramore – the band she fronts – released their debut album All We Know Is Falling, and since then they've won more than 30 awards and seen their records certified Platinum multiple times over. As an individual, she was ranked as one of the greatest rock singers of all time by Billboard in 2023, as well as being given the very first Billboard Women in Music Trailblazer Award in 2014. Respected and admired in the industry by her peers, she's worked with some of the industry's most influential characters - from David Byrne to Turnstile and American Football.

In 2020, Hayley Williams took a detour from Paramore to create her first solo record, Petals For Armor. Within this, she dabbled in genres and themes yet undiscovered in her discography, proving further her status as an innovator and true trailblazer. Fast forward to present day, and it could be argued that her 3rd solo record and latest release Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, is her finest work yet. From its unique rollout as 17 individual singles, to being ranked one of the best albums of 2025 by numerous publications, Ego Death truly flexed Williams' creative muscles in a way never seen before – as a musician, as a songwriter and as a vocalist in her own right. I truly believe Ego Death has solidified Hayley Williams' status as a true icon and legend, and she will be remembered for decades as one of rock music's all time greats."

In Rainbows (2007)

Radiohead

"Few bands are as instantly recognisable as Radiohead, and not only because of Thom Yorke's generational vocals. In Rainbows shaped the rock and indie soundscapes with its nuanced, intricate guitar work and the glitchy maelstrom of polyrhythmic complexity. This album stands out to me in Radiohead's incredible discography because it is deeply human, warm, and vulnerable, compared to the cold, anxiety-laced sound of their other iconic album, OK Computer (don't get it twisted, I love that one too).

As it was released in the early-streaming age, this album also challenged norms by self-releasing and asking fans to name their own price, encouraging a wider discourse about the value of music. I don't think there is much more that is as iconic as that."

The Low End Theory (1991)

A Tribe Called Quest

"The Low End Theory is the album that made me fall for jazz-hop. From the very first bassline, Tribe showed that hip-hop and jazz were always part of the same family. The beats breathe, the bass sits warm and deep, and the two voices trading verses sound like old friends finishing each other’s thoughts. It’s smooth, clever and effortlessly cool, and over thirty years on, it still slaps."

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023)

Chappell Roan

"Chappell Roan seemed to emerge into the spotlight out of nowhere with her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, quickly becoming a blueprint for queer pop. After a slow start, the album found its audience and became a chart-topping success, finally earning its deserved UK No. 1 almost a year after its release! It’s fun, honest, chaotic and unskippable. It has you jumping around, throwing your arms in the air YMCA-style, air-grabbing, dramatically reenacting every lyric and cursing your ex, all at the same time. Many of the songs are practically impossible to sing at karaoke (tried and tested), thanks to their speed and vocal range, but that doesn’t stop us from trying! More than just a collection of pop bangers, it celebrates queer identity, self-expression and finding your people. What an album, what a woman, what an ICON!"

Small Change (1976)

Tom Waits

"Biggest icon for me is Tom, easiest pick ever, but he has about 8 or 9 absolutely iconic albums, so that's a much harder choice. Blue Valentine was the first record I ever owned, Rain Dogs is objectively his coolest, but much like the Beatles, your favourite Tom Waits album is the one you're currently listening to. For me, that just happens to be Small Change. Probably a big contributor to his iconhood, it best encapsulates his beatnik troubadour persona that he's well known for. Like all icons, he's had many eras, from slick and sleazy raconteur through avant-garde vaudevillian to chaotic junkyard madman screaming into a megaphone! While each is more unique than the last, his most recognisable and iconic image probably has to be the cigarette-stained, down-and-out lounge singer that defined his early work, and while Small Change is just one pick from that era, it's one that I've been listening to a lot of late, and I think you should too."

Between The Richness (2021)

Fiddlehead

"Patrick Flynn is an American punk rock vocalist, songwriter, and schoolteacher, best known as the frontman of the hardcore band Have Heart and the post-hardcore band Fiddlehead. Between the Richness is, in my opinion, his best work. This album holds so much emotion from start to finish; it all makes for a short yet comprehensive exploration of humanity, emotions and existence. It’s one of those records that helps you understand life more by capturing all its highs and lows, and “Heart to Heart” is my favourite song on it: a phenomenal ending to the album."

Elliott Smith

"It’s that time of year again where Elliott Smith goes on loop for a good 6 months, and yeah I’m happy about it. It’s pretty difficult to pick a favourite album of his, but I just happen to be listening to Either/Or at the moment. “Speed Trials”, “Ballad Of Big Nothing” and of course “Angeles” are currently winning in my brain’s dopamine Olympics."

Funhouse (1970)

The Stooges

"Does it get any more iconic than Iggy? Funhouse is as powerful as it comes, paving the way for punk and dragging psychedelia to its true form: a chaotic, slightly dangerous altered state, not sun-drenched rainbows. Almost 60 years on and it still burns the house down, one of the most electrifying and galvanising records of all time. It’s not just raw, it’s feral."
