Pioneering alt-rock agitators whose genre-smashing sound and grebo roots helped redefine UK alternative music.
Pop Will Eat Itself are a veteran alternative rock band and one of the defining forces behind the grebo movement, blending indie rock, punk attitude, electronic textures and pop culture collage into a sound that was unmistakably their own. First formed in (1986), the band now features Graham Crabb on vocals, Richard March on bass and guitar, Adam Mole on guitar and keys, John “Fuzz” Townshend on drums, Mary Byker on vocals and keys, and Davey Bennett on guitar and bass. Their music is marked by sharp wit, sampling, noise and hooks, paired with an irreverent, confrontational edge that set them apart from their peers.
Across eight studio albums — Box Frenzy (1987), This Is the Day…This Is the Hour…This Is This! (1989), Cure for Sanity (1990), The Looks or the Lifestyle? (1992), Dos Dedos Mis Amigos (1994), New Noise Designed by a Sadist (2011), A Lick of the Old Cassette Box (2013) and Anti-Nasty League (2015) — the band have continually evolved while staying true to their disruptive spirit. Known for explosive live shows and a refusal to sit comfortably within genre boundaries, Pop Will Eat Itself remain a vital and influential presence in UK alternative music.
