Led by brash frontman Miles Hunt, the British music press was initially sceptical of The Wonder Stuff - largely because of their perception of Hunt as arrogant. However, they were soon to learn that Hunt’s attitude typified the entire character of The Wonder Stuff. A band who were mean and armed with a lacerating wit whose music draws upon catchy pop melodies then twists them with sneering lyrics and blasts it all out with massively loud guitars. Emerging in the late eighties it was unsurprising that their music would also incorporate the then emerging dance scene.
The alternative rock band were originally based in Stourbridge nestled in the Black County and formed in 1986. They were seized by Polydor Records and signed for £80,000 following the success of their indie EP A Wonderful Day. Their 1988 debut album The Eight Legged Groove Machine saw them chart at #18 and was declared as album of the year by Melody Maker.
It became clear that something great was in the works when single Don’t Let Me Down Gently broke the Top 20 upon its release in 1989. Featured on the album Hup, the LP would hit #5 in the UK Album Charts. Their rise would continue with the 1991 record Never Loved Elvis which contained their signature song The Size Of A Cow and reached #3. The band teamed up with alternative comedian Vic Reeves and released a cover of Tommy Roe’s Dizzy which shot to the top and hit #1 in the Singles Chart.
They released LP Construction For The Modern Idiot in 1993 which enjoyed #4 position before disbanding the following year. The Wonder Stuff would reform in 2000 and release another four studio albums titled Escape From Rubbish Island, Suspended By Stars, Oh No It’s… The Wonder Stuff and 30 Goes Around The Sun.
