Create Your Own Independent Record Label

Rather than being front line and centre, do you see yourself being the one behind the music and giving a new generation of performing artists a platform to become the next big thing? Iconic independent labels have dared to carve out their own sonic space and pushed music forward.

Jerry Dammers from The Specials famously began his iconic label 2-Tone Records from his Coventry home and kickstarted the ska resurgence that swept across the UK in the late 70’s and beyond almost entirely on his own – and the huge cultural and political wave he created can still be felt to this day. Factory Records galvanised the considerable talents of the city of Manchester from the 70’s to the 90’s, Heavenly Records is always ahead of the curve and Rough Trade continues to be the home of innovative indie.

Last year, NME gave out tips from those who had struck out on their own and similarly started a new independent label which you can check out HERE. If you’re seriously wanting to give this a go, you can find a more detailed guide from Sound On Sound HERE.
