The Horrors are a British band known for their evolution from garage goth rock to a more expansive shoegaze, post-punk, and electronic-influenced sound. Formed in Southend-on-Sea in 2005, the band initially made waves with their raw, horror-punk aesthetic and chaotic live shows. Their debut album, Strange House (2007), featured frenzied organ riffs, distorted guitars, and dark, theatrical vocals, with standout tracks like “Sheena Is a Parasite” earning them early attention.
However, The Horrors quickly defied expectations by reinventing themselves with Primary Colours (2009), a Mercury Prize-nominated album that introduced a more psychedelic and shoegaze-driven sound. Subsequent releases, including Skying (2011) and Luminous (2014), further expanded their sonic landscape, incorporating synth-driven textures and cinematic atmospheres. Known for their brooding yet anthemic songwriting, they have played major UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Latitude, and toured with acts like Depeche Mode and Florence + The Machine. With their ability to constantly evolve while maintaining a signature intensity, The Horrors remain one of the UK’s most compelling and unpredictable bands.
