Shed Seven are a British alternative rock band from York whose anthemic sound and enduring appeal have made them one of the defining names of the Britpop era and beyond. Formed in 1990 by Rick Witter (vocals), Paul Banks (guitar), Tom Gladwin (bass) and Alan Leach (drums), the band quickly rose to prominence with their jangly guitars, soaring choruses and heartfelt lyrics. Their debut album Change Giver (1994) introduced their energetic brand of melodic rock, featuring the hit single “Going for Gold” — a song that became a hallmark of the mid-’90s British guitar scene.
Follow-up album A Maximum High (1996) cemented their reputation with songs like “On Standby”, showcasing their knack for combining infectious melodies with emotional depth. Despite shifts in the musical landscape, Shed Seven continued to command a loyal following through consistent touring and passionate live shows. After a hiatus, they reunited in 2007 to wide acclaim and later released Instant Pleasures (2017), a triumphant return that blended nostalgia with maturity on tracks such as “Room in My House” and “Victoria”. With over three decades of music and countless live triumphs, Shed Seven remain a beloved British institution — champions of guitar-driven anthems and the unshakable spirit of Britpop.
