Howling Bells are an Australian indie rock band formed by siblings Juanita and Joel Stein, known for their dark, cinematic sound and striking mix of indie, alt-rock and dream-pop influences. Originally starting out in Sydney before relocating to London, the band made a powerful impression with their self-titled debut album Howling Bells (2006) — a brooding, atmospheric record built around Juanita’s haunting vocals and vivid, emotional storytelling. Tracks like “Setting Sun” and “Blessed Night” showcased their flair for moody soundscapes wrapped in rich melodies, earning widespread critical acclaim and a loyal following.
Their subsequent albums - Radio Wars (2009), The Loudest Engine (2011) and Heartstrings (2014) saw Howling Bells expand their palette, weaving psychedelia, Americana and glittering indie-pop into their increasingly ambitious sound. On stage they remain a captivating presence, known for spellbinding performances that balance intensity with dream-like beauty. With their cinematic aesthetic and ability to conjure emotion through atmosphere and melody, Howling Bells continue to stand out as one of the most distinctive Australian bands to emerge on the international indie scene.
