Fat Freddy’s Drop are a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand, whose sound fuses dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno into something unmistakably their own. Renowned for their free-flowing musicianship and improvisational spirit, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic live acts in the Southern Hemisphere. Fronted by Dallas Tamaira (aka Joe Dukie) on vocals, the band’s line-up features Chris Faiumu (DJ Fitchie, percussion), Toby Laing (Tony Chang, trumpet), Ned Ngatae (ManRaro, guitar), Iain Gordon (Dobie Blaze, keys), Joe Lindsay (Hopepa, trombone, tuba), Scott Towers (Chopper Reedz, saxophone) and Mark Williams (MC Slave, MC). Together, they weave genre boundaries into a fluid, ever-evolving groove.
Their debut album Based on a True Story (2005) became a modern classic, setting the template for their deep, dub-infused sound, while later releases such as Dr Boondigga and the Big BW (2009) and Blackbird (2013) expanded their reach worldwide. With Wairunga (2021), they captured the spirit of their outdoor performances, blending live improvisation with studio precision. Fat Freddy’s Drop continue to evolve, crafting long, hypnotic tracks that move seamlessly from dancefloor euphoria to soulful reflection — a sound both rooted in Aotearoa and resonant across the globe.
