Biffy Clyro encompasses many sounds in their music. Math rock, post hardcore and experimental sounds all feature in their amazing stadium anthems. The power trio include drummer Ben Johnston, Simon Neil on lead guitar and taking lead on vocals whilst James Johnston plays bass. Their stunning music has seen them win many awards including multiple titles at the Kerrang! Awards, with NME and the Q Awards.
The band was first instigated by Simon and Ben, originally working under the title Skrewfish and included the drummers twin brother James. The trio moved to Glasgow to study and continued to gig where they were spotted by the label Electric Honey who put out the EP Thekidswhopoptodaywillrocktomorrow. The release resulted in airplay of BBC Radio Scotland and a massive rise in their profile.
Their debut studio album was titled Blackened Sky and was released in 2002. Although an achievement for the band, it failed to impress many outside the band immediate circle of fans and suffered from unfavourable reviews. They soldiered on building a grassroots fan base with the release of albums The Vertigo Of Bliss in 2003 and Infinity Land in 2004.
Their breakthrough came in 2007 with the release of fourth record Puzzle. The band approached song writing with a more straight forward approach giving them a greater radio friendly appeal. And so bolstered with major label backing after signing to Warner Music UK subsidiary 14th Floor they rose to #2 in the UK album charts and would eventually reach Platinum sales. Puzzle was declared by Kerrang! as their album of the year.
The success would continue in 2009 with follow up album Only Revolutions. Featuring the artwork of Storm Thorgerson on the cover, the record would enter the charts at #8 to rise further to #3 as sales continued to rise. Both a critical and commercial success, the Platinum selling album would be nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.
They kicked off 2013 with the release of the double album Opposites which ended the long gap since their previous studio album release with the cover again designed by Thorgerson. It benefitted from rave reviews by critics and became their first album to hit #1 in the charts. Opposites has sold more than 260,000 copies to date. Following massive live performances and prominent festival appearances over the following tour years, the band decided to take some time off over 2015.
The band now end their break with the brand new album Ellipsis. Recorded over the past year at Eldorado Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, the new record flew off the shelves upon release. The #1 album also topped the charts in Germany, Switzerland plus Ireland and features the stunning tracks Howl, Animal Style and Wolves of Winter.
