Ghanaian musician Ata Kak blends highlife, hip hop, and electro-funk, creating a distinctive sound that has captivated global audiences.
Ata Kak is a Ghanaian musician renowned for his innovative fusion of highlife, hip hop, and electro-funk. Born Yaw Atta-Owusu in Kumasi, Ghana, he moved to Toronto in 1989, where he played drums for the highlife band Marijata. Dissatisfied with traditional band setups, he began recording his music in his apartment using a secondhand drum machine and synthesiser. In 1994, he self-released his debut album Obaa Sima on cassette, which initially sold only three copies and went largely unnoticed.
The album remained obscure until 2002, when Brian Shimkovitz, founder of the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog, discovered a copy in Cape Coast, Ghana. The album was reissued in 2015, gaining international acclaim for its unique sound. Obaa Sima has since garnered millions of streams and has been instrumental in reviving Ata Kak's music career.
