The Physics House Band + InTechnicolour, Sunbird Records, Darwen - 7th May 2017
An interesting little gig, this one. Out in Darwen, North of Manchester, late on a Sunday. Not many had made the effort to travel to the gig, and indeed I don't believe many were there who weren't member or friends of the bands playing.
First up was Let's Swim, who were eager and energetic. Actually, their performance won me over with their enthusiasm and very skilled performance.
Next up were Intechnicolour, for whom I had high hopes. Unfortunately those hopes were dashed. Admittedly, the overall mix of the 5 piece was muddy, and the vocals somewhat lost in the cacophony. I can't help but feel that was for the best. The front-man's ramblings between tracks, urging us to buy their wares, wore thin very quick. In most cases I feel the tracks would have been better instrumental. Like a mix between Kyuss and Karnivool, I should have enjoyed these a lot more than I did. Perhaps they were having a bad night.
The Physics House Band were on top form, as always. I can hear even more Mars Volta's influence on their newest full-length, and that follows through to the live performance, where sometimes the noise sections drone on a bit too long and can come across as self-indulgent. In all, an excellent performance that I'm very glad we travelled for. Their gig in Soup Kitchen late last year was once of my favourites of the entire year. I look forward to hearing what they do next.
