About The Men They Couldn't Hang

The Men They Couldn’t Hang are a landmark British folk rock band, formed in London in 1984 and widely recognised as key figures in the genre’s politically charged revival. Blending traditional folk storytelling with punk urgency and roots rock grit, the band quickly carved out a powerful and distinctive sound. Their debut album Night of a Thousand Candles (1985) introduced their uncompromising approach, followed by influential releases including How Green Is the Valley (1986) and Waiting for Bonaparte (1988), records that firmly established their place in British alternative music.

Renowned for emotionally charged songwriting and passionate live performances, The Men They Couldn’t Hang became known for songs such as “Ghosts of Cable Street” and “Ironmasters”, which remain enduring highlights of their catalogue. After an initial split in 1991, the band reformed in 1996 and have continued to record and tour, maintaining a devoted following across the UK and beyond. Fiercely down-to-earth and driven by powerful narratives, The Men They Couldn’t Hang remain a vital voice in British folk rock, celebrated for their honesty, conviction and storytelling strength.
