Lovely!
Our first gig at Nottingham's "The Maze" proved to be an all-dayer - a total of seven support bands (unfortunately we missed "Bus Stop Madonnas") plus The Eggs themselves. The "point of similarity" seemed to be a post-punk/ new wave energetic vibe to the performances, set in a friendly and welcoming environment with some tempting real ales on sale! The degree of organisation and efficiency required for each band's setting-up and dismantling of their equipment had to be seen to be believed, 45 minutes then OFF! Next one please!
The atmosphere gradually built as the temperature ascended, our refuge proving to be the smoking area at the back of the venue which provided some much-needed (mostly) fresh air; The Lovely Eggs' set leant heavily on material from their "This is Eggland" album with a few proven crowd pleasers from previous releases, there's no-one quite like them and they were a fitting climax to a day which showcased the diversity and energy of a broad spectrum of (partly local) groups which have inherited the values of the New Wave, made them their own and run off with them!
