Henry Normal, born Peter James Carroll, is a writer, poet and acclaimed TV/film producer whose warm humour and thoughtful storytelling have made him a beloved figure in British arts. He began his creative journey in the world of fanzines before publishing his debut poetry collection Is Love Science Fiction?, marking the start of a long and heartfelt relationship with the written word. Alongside his work as a poet, Normal became a major force in British television when he co-founded Baby Cow Productions with Steve Coogan in 1999. Together, they helped bring to life some of the UK’s most iconic comedy series, shaping modern British TV with a blend of wit, insight and originality.
Beyond screen and page, Henry Normal has been instrumental in championing poetry and literature across the UK. He founded the Literature Festival — originally the Manchester Poetry Festival — and later co-founded the Nottingham Poetry Festival, nurturing platforms that celebrate creativity, community and the joy of language. His contributions to British culture were recognised in 2017 with a special BAFTA for services to television, highlighting his unique ability to bridge humour, heart and humanity across every medium he touches. Today, he remains a cherished voice, writing and performing poetry that continues to resonate with warmth, honesty and gentle wisdom.
