Bushman, born Dwight Duncan in Spring Garden, St Thomas, is a powerful roots reggae singer known for his warm baritone and spiritually driven songwriting. Growing up in a Rastafari household, he first found his voice in school choirs and local sound-systems under the name Junior Melody. His path changed when he connected with renowned producers Steely & Clevie in Kingston, leading to early recordings such as “Grow Your Natty” and “Call the Hearse”. Taking the name Bushman, inspired by the Afrikan meaning “medicine man”, he released his debut album Nyah Man Chant (1997), which quickly earned praise as a modern roots classic.
He continued to build his sound across albums including Total Commitment (1999) and Higher Ground (2001), working with icons such as King Jammy and deepening his reputation for conscious, uplifting reggae. Blending spiritual reflection with soulful melodies, Bushman’s music has resonated with audiences worldwide and kept him rooted at the heart of the genre. With a voice that carries both wisdom and warmth, he remains a steadfast presence in roots reggae, bringing messages of unity, strength and cultural pride.
