Alex James is a British musician, songwriter and bassist best known as a founding member of Blur — one of the defining bands of the 1990s Britpop era. Born in Bournemouth in 1968, James joined forces with Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree while studying at Goldsmiths, University of London, and together they created a sound that blended art-school wit with sharp melodic sensibility. As Blur’s bassist, he contributed to era-defining albums such as Parklife (1994), The Great Escape (1995) and 13 (1999), helping to craft hits including “Girls & Boys”, “Song 2” and “Tender”. His rhythmic flair and laid-back charisma became key to the band’s identity as they rose to international fame.
Outside Blur, Alex James has pursued a varied and colourful career. He’s worked as a songwriter, journalist and broadcaster, and collaborated with artists including Fatboy Slim and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. In later years he turned to farming, establishing an award-winning cheesemaking business on his Oxfordshire farm and becoming a prominent food writer and festival organiser, co-founding The Big Feastival with chef Jamie Oliver. Combining creative curiosity with entrepreneurial spirit, Alex James remains one of British pop culture’s most distinctive and versatile figures.
