Underworld is a British electronic music duo formed by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, renowned for their genre-defining blend of techno, house, and ambient music. Emerging from the UK’s underground dance scene in the early 1990s, Underworld became one of the most influential acts in progressive electronic music, crafting hypnotic, pulsating tracks with Hyde’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics and Smith’s innovative production.
Their breakthrough came with the 1996 album Second Toughest in the Infants, which featured the iconic "Born Slippy .NUXX", a track that gained worldwide fame after its inclusion in Trainspotting. Subsequent albums like Beaucoup Fish (1999) and Oblivion with Bells (2007) solidified their reputation for both club anthems and immersive soundscapes. Underworld has headlined major festivals including Glastonbury, Coachella, and Sonar, and contributed to Danny Boyle’s 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony soundtrack. Continually evolving, they remain a defining force in electronic music, pushing boundaries while staying true to their unmistakable sound.
