Formed in Leeds in 1980 and named after a Leonard Cohen song, The Sisters of Mercy forged a sound entirely their own from the grit of The Stooges, Motörhead and Suicide – welding guitars, relentless drum-machine pummel and Andrew Eldritch’s unmistakable baritone into something more hypnotic and dramatic than their post-punk peers.
Their reputation rests on three classic albums. First and Last and Always (1985) set the template; Floodland (1987) delivered the epic singles “Dominion”, “Lucretia My Reflection” and the towering, ten-minute “This Corrosion”, all still filling dancefloors today; and Vision Thing (1990) pushed towards a harder, metal-edged attack. They haven’t released a studio album since, yet their influence has only deepened over the years. Live, with Eldritch and the ever-present Doktor Avalanche at the helm, they remain a genuine cult force – pairing huge hits and deep cuts with a cinematic light show and a guttural, forward-driving intensity that has kept audiences coming back for generations.
