Having already reshaped the landscape of rock with Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould joined forces with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis to form Sugar in late 1991. Their live debut at Athens, Georgia’s 40 Watt Club set the stage for Copper Blue (1992), a record hailed by NME as Album of the Year. Blending melody with muscle, its anthems — “A Good Idea,” “Helpless,” and “If I Can’t Change Your Mind” — turned catharsis into pop brilliance and secured the trio’s place at the heart of the alternative rock movement. Their electrifying rise included unforgettable performances such as their show-stealing turn at London’s Great X-pectations Festival.
Sugar built on that success with the darker, more visceral Beaster in 1993 and the adventurous File Under: Easy Listening a year later, expanding their sound without losing their bite. Though the band dissolved after a final tour in 1995, their influence never faded. Three decades on, the original trio reunited in 2025, unveiling House of Dead Memories — their first new song in over 30 years — and reigniting the spark that once redefined melodic rock.
