Stornoway are an outstanding indie folk outfit that includes tenor and guitarist Brian Briggs, baritone and zither from Jon Ouin, baritone and bass by Oli Steadman and soprano drummer Rob Steadman with the talents of trumpeters Adam Briggs and Thomas Hodgson with Susie Attwood on violin.
The band was formed after Briggs met Ouin at Fresher’s Week at Oxford University and informed him that he looked like a member of Teenage Fanclub. After confirming that Ouin did indeed like the band, the two began to jam together and recruited the other members.
They took their name from the town of Stornoway on the Hebridean Isle of Lewis, despite having never been there, after noticing its frequent appearance on all British weather reports and shipping forecasts.
Championed by BBC Oxford radio presenter Tim Bearder, Stornoway would make a high profile appearance on Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2009 and play a free concert at Tate Modern before featuring on Later… with Jools Holland - one of the only unsigned bands ever to do so.
The band signed to incredible indie label 4AD and released their debut album Beachcomber’s Windowsill in 2010. It peaked at #14 in the UK Albums Chart and with sales of more than 60,000 copies it has been certified Silver.
Sticking with 4AD, the band released their second album Tales From Terra Firma in 2013. The record went down well with critics and audiences reaching #26 in the charts.
The band’s latest album was named Bonxie and released by the label Cooking Vinyl in 2015 and saw them chart at #20.
