Slowdive, O2 Academy Oxford, Oxford - 2nd June 2017

Ive wanted to see Slowdive live for long time-finally got to to see them last friday. 5 hours travelling time to see them but well worth it. Quality of the music was superb. Quite a small venue which i prefer-reminded me of seeing cocteau twins in cardiff 30 years ago. Hopefully see Slowdive again in the future.

Very good show, guitars and drums sounded great especially the new songs. the one criticism I have is the vocals are way too low which I accept is the genre of music however if you see Ride live the vocals are very clear. I just believe it takes a little away from the show

Slowdive, O2 Academy Oxford, Oxford - 2nd June 2017

Great, full sound from Slowdive. Those guitars of theirs are so melodic, pervasive and expressive. They performed numerous old favourites and new tracks very convincingly, fervently, skilfully. The drummer is technically excellent. Good vibe in the room from fans. Great vocals from the band. Very impressed.

My only gripe is that they didn't appear on stage till after 21:00! Lots of standing around, waiting for your favourite act to appear. What else to do but, to the venue's probable delight, buy more beer?

Slowdive are known for writing intricate songs drenched in a deep sea of distortion and have come to define the shoegaze genre. Their trio of albums are now considered vital canon of any well stocked alternative record collection.

The band’s work has always remained important listening and with the recent resurge in interest in the shoegaze sound they have never been more relevant than now. Despite originally splitting in the mid nineties, they have now made their very welcome return.

Their defining feature remains layers of fuzzy, barbed guitar, distorted by copious use of effects pedals into a spectral, amorphous haze. This exquisite aggregation lends a dense, profound quality to their music: gorgeous washes of sound” - The Guardian

Their band members include drummer Simon Scott, guitarists Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead who share vocals plus Christian Savill also on guitar and Nick Chaplin on bass.

Formed in 1989, the Reading band too their name from a dream Chaplin had plus the name of a single by Siouxsie And The Banshees and were soon signed to the ultimate indie label Creation. Their arrival was announced with the release of debut album Just For A Day two years later. Subsequent releases include Souvlaki and Pygmalion.

They would split in 1995 following their final album release and wouldn’t return for nearly twenty years. Now they are back with the release of an eponymously titled album to the delight of the fan has which has continued to grow in their absence.

Do not miss your chance to see them at Concorde 2 at Brighton on Wednesday 12th of December 2018.

Artist Bio

Shoegaze outfit Slowdive have revealed they will be playing two headline dates at The Forum in London on the 19th and 20th December.

Slowdive formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1995 before reuniting in 2014. The band presently consists of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar) Christian Savill (guitar) and Simon Scott (drums).

The five-piece impressed EMI with their early demos and signed with Creation Records when the band had an average age of just 19 years old. Slowdive's self-titled EP in 1990 received widespread praise from critics and fans alike and this praise continued with their next two EP releases 'Morningrise' and 'Holding Our Breath' both released in 1991. The band's debut album 'Just for a Day' had a mixed reception in 1991 due to the public opinion of shoegaze music at the time, but the group did receive support from publications such as NME and successfully got their debut released in America by SKB Records. Slowdive's second release 'Souvlaki' (1993) also felt the brunt of the public's negative feelings towards shoegaze music and delays on their US release halted the records overall progress. It was during this turbulent period that SBK pulled the band's funding halfway through their America tour delivering another crushing blow to the album's cycle. After a change in line-up Slowdive went on to release 'Pygmalion' in 1995, but were dropped by their long-time UK label Creation a week after its release. This marked the end of Slowdive and members broke off to form other bands such as Mojave 3.

Slowdive's reunion came in 2014 after a Twitter account pointed towards the band's website with clues on the group’s reformation. Slowdive soon began appearing at festivals across the world to mark their official return.
