Sam Fender is a singer-songwriter from North Shields, Tyne and Wear, known for his raspy vocals, guitar-driven sound and lyrics rooted in life in the North East of England.
He first gained attention with his debut album, Hypersonic Missiles, released in 2019, which went straight to number one in the UK. His follow-up, Seventeen Going Under, came out in 2021 and explored his experiences growing up, touching on family, mental health and life in a working-class community. The title track became one of his best-known songs, connecting with listeners through its personal and raw lyrics.
In 2025, he released his third album, People Watching, which continued his focus on everyday life, loss and the people who shape us. The album topped the UK charts and went on to win the 2025 Mercury Prize. One of its standout tracks, "Rein Me In", took on a new life when Fender teamed up with Olivia Dean. After performing it together at his London Stadium show, the pair released a duet featuring a new verse written by Dean, giving the song a second perspective. It became a major hit, winning Song of the Year at the 2026 BRIT Awards and breaking records for its run at number one in the UK.
Fender's music draws heavily on rock, with Bruce Springsteen among his key influences, but his songs are firmly shaped by his own background and the people and places he knows. He has built a reputation for intense live performances and songs that tackle subjects such as poverty, masculinity and social inequality without shying away from difficult details.
In 2022, he won the BRIT Award for Best British Alternative/Rock Act. From his early days playing small venues to selling out major shows, Fender has stayed closely connected to his roots, with the North East remaining a central part of his music and identity.
