Johannesburg-born, Melbourne-based songwriter Ruby Gill turns existential dread, queer joy and everyday absurdity into folk songs that are as devastating as they are funny.
Born in Johannesburg and now based in Melbourne, Ruby Gill writes folk songs unlike any you've heard before. She has a sharp eye for detail and a bone-dry sense of humour, and she takes on existential dread, queer joy, political frustration and life's little absurdities, often leaving listeners in tears and laughing in the same breath. Her 2018 debut single "Your Mum" earned a full add on triple j, and "you should do this for a living" (2021) featured backing vocals from Angie McMahon and Maple Glider.
Her debut album I'm gonna die with this frown on my face (2022) was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and for Best Folk Work at the Music Victoria Awards. Her follow-up, Some Kind Of Control (2025), reached the top five of the ARIA Australian Country Albums chart, made the Australian Music Prize shortlist and won Best Independent Country Album or EP at the AIR Awards. On stage, she has played festivals from Oppikoppi to Woodford, shared bills with Missy Higgins, Stella Donnelly and Angie McMahon, and headlined shows in Australia and the UK. She's also a published poet, with writing in the Saturday Paper and the Griffith Review.
