Painting are a Berlin trio who never sit still. Formed in 2020, the band is Theresa Stroetges, Christian Hohenbild and Sophia Trollmann. All three sing, and they swap freely between bass, guitar, drums, saxophone, synths and electronics. The result is a thrilling tangle of punk energy, math-rock rhythms, techno pulses and free-jazz sax, held together by a real love of leftfield pop.
Their debut album, Painting Is Dead (2022), quickly built them a strong reputation at home, with Rolling Stone calling them "the greatest new band in the German pop avant-garde". Scottish label Lost Map Records later reissued it in an expanded deluxe edition. Their second album, Snapshot Of Pure Attention (2025), came out jointly on Berlin's Sinnbus and Lost Map. On it, the band turned their curiosity towards artificial intelligence, lending their own voices to the words of a language model on tracks such as "AI, Absolutely!". With tumbling call-and-response vocals and constant changes of direction, Painting make music for anyone who likes their pop full of surprises.
