Founded in 1983 by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Dave Mustaine, the band swiftly became one of thrash metal's revered "Big Four" alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, building a devoted global following on the strength of their ferocious riffs, technical firepower and razor-sharp lyrics.
Across four decades they have delivered a run of genre-defining records, from the platinum-selling Peace Sells… But Who's Buying? (1986) and Rust in Peace (1990) to the double-platinum Countdown to Extinction (1992), notching nine top ten albums on the US Billboard 200 along the way. Dystopia (2016) earned them a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, and they kept the intensity soaring with The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! (2022). Their self-titled album (2026) topped both the US Billboard 200 and the UK Rock and Metal Albums Chart. On stage, Megadeth remain a commanding live force with few equals in metal.
