About Matthew And The Atlas

Matthew And The Atlas are a superb alternative folk band that are absolutely unmissable. The five-piece band from Aldershot was formed in 2010 and includes Matt Hegarty, James Drohan, Tommy Heap, Alex Roberts & Emma Gatrill.

They are led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hegarty who was the first act to be signed to essential record label Communion. Their previous records include the fantastic EPs To The North and Kingdom Of Your Own plus the studio album Other Rivers.

They begin their extensive tour in Spring which sees them play Patterns at Brighton, Bristol Fleece, The Globe at Cardiff, The Bodega at Nottingham, Norwich Arts Centre and The Deaf Institute in Manchester during May 2019.

Their new album is entitled Temple and is an absolutely essential listen. Whereas their debut album was the product of six year’s work the current release took just three months. Setting himself the ambitious target or writing a song a week in his home studio at Farnborough, he was able to produce high quality work at an astonishing rate.

While their instrumentation is pure new folk - acoustic guitars, accordion, banjo, winsome female backing vocal - the band's songbook sounds oak-barrel aged. Hegarty's earthy odes to heartbreak and deliverance have a classic quality. His gravelly woodsman's voice sounds not unlike Ray LaMontagne's; his melodies resemble those of Bon Iver, Damien Rice or David Gray.” - The Independent
