Kataklysm emerged from Montréal in 1991, unleashing a ferocious and relentless brand of death metal the band would later dub “Northern Hyperblast” for its ceaseless intensity. Early demos like The Death Gate Cycle of Reincarnation and EPs such as The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation laid the groundwork for their reputation in the extreme metal underground. Over the years, Kataklysm evolved — blending blistering blast beats with melodic structures and groove–inflected passages — while always retaining a raw edge.
Their discography is a testament to their resilience and ambition. Shadows & Dust (2002) is often cited as a turning point, solidifying the band’s signature balance of aggression and melody. Of Ghosts and Gods (2015) earned them the Juno Award for Heavy Metal Album of the Year, marking national recognition for their long-standing influence. Through many line-ups and stylistic shifts, Kataklysm have continued to command stages around the world, converting brutal energy into immersive, cathartic experience for audiences of extreme music.
