About James Yorkston

James Yorkston is a Scottish singer-songwriter, musician, and author, known for his evocative folk music and distinctive blend of traditional sounds with contemporary influences. Born in  Stratford-upon-Avon, England, and raised in Kingsbarns, Fife, Yorkston has been a significant figure in the folk music scene since the early 2000s. He gained recognition as a member of the Fence Collective, alongside artists like King Creosote and KT Tunstall, and later formed the band The Athletes.

Yorkston's career began with the punk band Miraclehead before transitioning to a solo career. His breakthrough came when John Peel played his demo of “Moving Up Country, Roaring the Gospel” on BBC Radio 1, which led to his first release under the moniker J. Wright Presents. Throughout his career, he has released numerous solo albums, including The Great White Sea Eagle (2022), a collaboration with The Second Hand Orchestra and Nina Persson. Alongside his music, Yorkston is also a published author, with books like It's Lovely to be Here – The Touring Diaries of a Scottish Gent and The Book of the Gaels.
