Hellripper is a one-man black/speed metal project created by Scottish musician James McBain in 2014 and based in the Highlands of Scotland. Known for a ferocious blend of 1980s black metal ferocity, thrash propulsion and rock-and-roll swagger, the project has been lauded by Metal Hammer as “Scotland’s King of the Arcane Mosh”.
Hellripper made its bold statement with the debut album Coagulating Darkness (2017), ollowed by The Affair of the Poisons (2020) – a record inspired by historical witchcraft and arcane themes – and Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags (2023), which drew on Scottish folklore and legend to deepen its atmosphere and scope. With brutal live shows, relentless riffing and a refusal to compromise, Hellripper stands out as one of the UK’s most formidable extreme-metal forces.
