Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond takes fingerpicked blues and American Primitive guitar somewhere eerie and exhilarating, with a spellbinding sound she calls Welsh Primitive.
Raised on the outskirts of Cardiff and now based in Brighton, Gwenifer Raymond is a fingerstyle guitarist with a sound entirely her own. She came to the instrument through Nirvana and the Pixies before falling hard for Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey. Since then she has reshaped those blues and folk traditions around her South Wales roots and a love of folk horror, and she calls the result Welsh Primitive. Her debut You Were Never Much of a Dancer (2018) marked her out as a formidable talent, while follow-up Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain (2020) was shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize.
Her third album, Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark (2025), sent her music spiralling out into the cosmos with drone-laced pieces steeped in sci-fi and high strangeness. BBC Radio 6 Music's Gideon Coe and NPR's Lars Gotrich both named it their album of the year. It has taken her from an NPR Tiny Desk concert and a KEXP session to a Primavera Sound show in Barcelona, FolkEast in Suffolk and a support slot with Mitski at London's Royal Albert Hall. Live, expect jaw-dropping technique and pieces that swing from delicate to downright ferocious.
