Epica are the foremost Dutch symphonic metal band. A must see for any fans of gothic rock.
Epica’s current line-up consists of the growling rhthym guitarist Mark Jansen, keys by Coen Janssen, singer Simone Simons, drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek, lead guitarist Isaac Delahaye and Rob van der Loo on bass.
The band first started as a project by Jansen named Sahara Dust. Recruiting his then girlfriend Simons to sing backed by a choir and stringed orchestra, they would produce a demo named Cry For The Moon which would see them sign to Transmission Records.
Changing their name to Epica, the band released their debut album The Phantom Agony in 2003. The album featured songs which warn of the dangers that come from organised religion. Second album Consign To Oblivion took influence from the ancient Maya civilization and came out in 2005.
Third album The Divine Conspiracy could be considered a concept album. The 2007 posed the idea that all religions are created by the same one god and hold some truth. The challenge for humanity is to gain those truths and overcome each religion to recognise that they are all, in essence, the same. These ideas were explored further in their next album Design Your Universe. Released in 2009, the album hit #8 in the Dutch charts.
Requiem For The Indifferent continued to warn of the dangers of organised religion. The 2012 record also looked at the pressures humanity faces from financial pressures, natural disasters and culture clashes.
Their latest record The Quantum Enigma came out in 2014 and was noted as being their most emotional and intense release yet.
