David Duchovny has been quietly building a body of work as a songwriter and musician since his debut album Hell or Highwater (2015). Working with a close-knit band of collaborators, he has developed a warm, organic sound that draws comparisons to Wilco and The Wallflowers — country-flecked alt-rock with real emotional weight. AllMusic praised his music as "eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk," while the Boston Globe noted that he "sings with a parched resonance and just a hint of rasp."
His fourth album, Prince of Pieces, follows Every Third Thought (2018) and Gestureland (2021), and finds the band at their most cohesive and collaborative yet. Rooted in a Californian, Laurel Canyon-influenced vibe, it balances rootsy folk-rock warmth with moments of genuine sonic ambition — the kind of record that sounds like a band playing together in a room and meaning every note.
