Black Grape burst out of Salford in 1993, born from the creative ashes of Happy Mondays. Fronted by Shaun Ryder alongside Bez and Paul “Kermit” Leveridge, their debut album, It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah (1995), combined funk-rock, acid house, hip-hop and Ryder’s razor-sharp lyricism to top the UK Albums Chart and go platinum. Their follow-up, Stupid Stupid Stupid (1997), kept the party spirit alive and earned gold status—but internal tensions led to a dramatic split, as Ryder fired the lineup mid-tour.
After brief reunions in 2010 and a larger comeback in 2015, Black Grape returned with Pop Voodoo (2017), a funk-pop-trip-hop hybrid recorded in Spain with producer Youth. They released Orange Head in 2024, their fourth studio album, signalling a new creative chapter. To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their debut, Shaun Ryder and Kermit are heading out on a UK tour this autumn, lighting up stages from Glasgow to London with their inimitable energy.
