London-based klezmer violinist, composer and teacher known for her expressive performances, deep roots in Yiddish music and commitment to inclusive musical practice.
Anna Lowenstein is a London-based violinist, composer and educator who has become one of the UK’s most respected performers of the klezmer fiddle tradition, a vibrant strand of Eastern European Jewish music. Trained initially in classical music and graduating in Music and Ethnomusicology from Manchester University, she embraced klezmer — a repertoire rooted in both joy and lament — and has spent over a decade developing her expressive, improvisational style within that world. Alongside klezmer, Anna’s musical interests encompass Irish traditional music and other folk idioms, all informing a sound that is both deeply rooted and refreshingly personal.
Anna’s work spans performance, composition and teaching, with notable appearances including live sessions on BBC Radio 3 Music Planet with Grammy-winning project Yiddish Glory and as part of the on-stage band for the European debut of the Tony Award-winning play Indecent at the Menier Chocolate Factory. She regularly teaches nationally and internationally, sharing her passion for klezmer and participatory music, including work with children with SEN and on specialist courses such as Klezfest and Yiddish Summer Weimar. Her music blends historical tradition with inventive improvisation, creating rich, emotive performances that open new pathways into a living musical heritage.
