The Vaselines are an iconic indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, known for their charmingly lo-fi sound and playful, irreverent lyrics. Formed in 1986 by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, the duo quickly gained cult status with their debut album Dum-Dum (1989) and standout tracks like “Son of a Gun” and “Molly’s Lips.” Although short-lived in their initial run, their music gained global recognition when Nirvana covered several of their songs, including “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam” on MTV Unplugged in New York (1994).
Reuniting in 2008, The Vaselines released their second album, Sex with an X (2010), followed by V for Vaselines (2014), both of which retained their signature wit and jangly melodies while introducing a polished edge. Over the years, they’ve performed at notable UK festivals like All Tomorrow’s Parties and End of the Road, as well as intimate venues across the country, captivating audiences with their playful stage presence and timeless indie charm. The Vaselines remain a beloved part of the alternative music landscape, celebrated for their influence on the grunge and indie pop movements alike.
