Soul II Soul is a British musical collective formed in London in 1988, best known for their genre-blending sound that fuses R&B, soul, reggae, and dance music. Fronted by producer, DJ, and songwriter Jazzie B, the group became a defining force in the late 1980s and early 1990s, pioneering a sophisticated yet streetwise take on club culture.
Their breakthrough came with the release of the 1989 album Club Classics Vol. One, which featured the iconic singles "Keep On Movin’" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)", the latter of which became an international hit and remains one of the most influential tracks in UK dance music history. The album established their signature sound—deep basslines, lush orchestration, and soulful vocals—while also setting a new standard for British R&B and dance music.
Following their initial success, Soul II Soul released several more albums, including Vol. II: 1990 – A New Decade (1990) and Volume III: Just Right (1992), which continued their innovative fusion of soul, hip-hop, and electronic elements. Over the years, the group has seen various lineup changes, with different vocalists such as Caron Wheeler, Charlotte Kelly, and Rose Windross contributing to their evolving sound.
Beyond their chart success, Soul II Soul played a pivotal role in shaping British black music and club culture, influencing countless artists in the realms of R&B, trip-hop, and neo-soul. Their impact extends beyond music, as their fashion and aesthetic—rooted in Afrocentric style and UK street culture—became an essential part of their identity.
Despite line-up changes and shifts in the music industry, Soul II Soul has remained active, continuing to tour and perform. Their legacy as pioneers of British soul and dance music remains intact, with Club Classics Vol. One often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time.
