Tracey Nelson is the New York songwriter crafting warm, self-deprecating indie alt-country, backed by MJ Lenderman and members of Wednesday.
Tracey Nelson is the recording project of New York songwriter Austin Noll — and the name is no invention. Tracey Nelson is his mother's name, one he carries with him wherever he goes, lending his music a quiet, personal warmth. Rooted in the same countrified indie-rock world as his friends in Asheville, North Carolina, Noll writes bright, tender songs that wear a heavy heart lightly, delivered in a characterful, warbling drawl.
His debut album, Hercules, began life as a self-released CD-R before finding a home on Perennial, an imprint of the revered Olympia label K Records. It is very much a family affair, co-produced by MJ Lenderman and Colin Miller and featuring a cast of kindred spirits including Wednesday's Karly Hartzman, Ethan Baechtold and Xandy Chelmis, alongside Landon George and former Hotline TNT guitarist Jack Kraus. The result is a dazed, friendly folk-rock record of jangling melodies and gentle alt-country amble, marking Nelson out as a real classicist with an ear for unhurried, heartfelt songcraft.
