About Toots and the Maytals

Few bands can claim to have named an entire genre, but Toots and the Maytals can. The group was formed in Kingston in 1962 as a vocal trio fronted by Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert, and became one of Jamaica's best-loved ska and rocksteady acts. Their 1968 single "Do the Reggay" was the first song to use the word 'reggae'. Their songbook is packed with classics, from "54-46 That's My Number", "Monkey Man" and "Pressure Drop" to "Funky Kingston", "Time Tough" and "Reggae Got Soul". "Pressure Drop" and "Sweet and Dandy" also appear on the soundtrack to the cult film The Harder They Come. Toots' soulful, gospel-tinged voice earned him a place on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest singers, and the band won Grammy Awards for True Love (2004) and Got to Be Tough (2020).

Today the band is led by Toots' daughter Leba Hibbert. She spent years on stage alongside her father, sang on both Grammy-winning albums, and has worked with reggae greats Sly & Robbie and Jimmy Cliff. With Leba at the helm, those much-loved songs still come with all the joy and irresistible groove that made them classics.
