Toots & The Maytals are a pioneering ska, rocksteady and reggae band from Jamaica, first formed in the early 1960s. Their early recordings, including the 1968 single “Do The Reggay”, helped coin the very term reggae, shaping the definition of the genre. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert led the group with a soulful, raw vocal style—drawing on gospel, soul, ska and roots—to create timeless songs such as 54-46 Was My Number, Monkey Man, Pressure Drop and Funky Kingston that have inspired generations.
Following Toots Hibbert’s passing in 2020, the band continues under the leadership of his daughter, Leba Hibbert, who honours her father’s legacy while bringing her own voice and energy to the band. Leba has worked with icons like Sly & Robbie and Jimmy Cliff and has released her own music, ensuring the band’s sound stays rooted in its legendary past yet alive and relevant in the present.
