Formed in the West Midlands in 1983 by RR Dallaway, who had previously co-founded punk favourites The Cravats, The Very Things quickly built a devoted following with their wonderfully strange take on post-punk. Debut album The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes (1984) gave them an indie hit with its title track, which went on to get its own cult black-and-white film on Channel 4's The Tube. John Peel was a fan too, inviting the band in for several sessions. Second album Motortown (1987) turned up the funk and gave fans the single "This Is Motortown", before the band went their separate ways in 1988.
Now back as The Very Things GXL, Dallaway leads a line-up that includes original drummer Disney Time alongside Steven Burrows and Tony Sherrard. The 2024 album Mr. Arc-Eye (under a cellophane sky), the band's first new record in more than 35 years, was welcomed by reviewers as a bold step forward rather than a look back. Live, expect jagged rhythms, angular grooves, cinematic textures and that trademark dark humour, with fresh material sitting happily alongside much-loved cult classics.
The event is taking place at Gullivers, Manchester. See individual listings for full venue details.
