About The Streets

Mike Skinner’s The Streets project emerged in the early 2000s as a voice for everyday British life — sharp, observant, and relatable. His debut Original Pirate Material (2002) was both critically and commercially powerful, earning Mercury Prize attention, with singles such as “Has It Come to This?” and “Don’t Mug Yourself” weaving club-culture energy with storytelling. His follow-up, A Grand Don’t Come for Free (2004), is a full concept album that features the number-one hit “Dry Your Eyes” and solidified his reputation for blending rap, garage and narrative in new ways. Later records, from The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living (2006) to Computers and Blues (2011), continued to explore fame, technology and personal struggle.

On stage, The Streets have played at major UK festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading, and shared stages supporting artists across genres. The project went on hiatus in 2011 but returned in 2017 and 2020 with new material, culminating in the 2023 album The Darker the Shadow the Brighter the Light, released alongside a self-directed feature film and a UK tour.
