About Songhoy Blues

Songhoy Blues are a Malian desert blues-rock band whose music is a powerful fusion of traditional West African rhythms and gritty, electric energy. Formed in 2012 in Bamako, Mali, after being displaced by conflict in the country’s north, the band channels their experiences into music that is both defiant and deeply rooted in their cultural heritage.


Blending the hypnotic guitar lines of Tuareg desert blues with the raw power of rock and roll, Songhoy Blues have drawn comparisons to legends like Ali Farka Touré and Jimi Hendrix, while carving out their own distinct, modern sound. Their debut album, Music in Exile (2015), produced by Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, introduced them to the world with tracks like "Soubour," an anthem of resilience that captured their spirit of perseverance.


Since then, the band has continued to evolve, pushing the boundaries of their genre with albums like Résistance (2017) and Optimisme (2020). Their music carries messages of hope, unity, and resistance, reflecting both their personal journey and the struggles of their homeland.


Songhoy Blues are also renowned for their electrifying live performances, bringing infectious energy to stages across the globe, from Glastonbury to Coachella. With their unmistakable groove, socially conscious lyrics, and genre-defying sound, they have become one of Africa’s most exciting musical exports, proving that music can be both a celebration and a form of protest.
