About Patti Smith

Patti Smith is an American singer, songwriter and performer whose music helped shape the emergence of punk rock in the 1970s. Combining the raw energy of rock and roll with poetic intensity, rebellious spirit and an uncompromising artistic vision, she developed a distinctive sound that challenged the conventions of popular music.

Emerging from New York's vibrant underground scene, Smith released her landmark debut album, Horses, in 1975. Its fusion of garage rock, punk, spoken word and free-form expression established her as a pioneering voice in a new generation of rock music. Tracks such as "Gloria" and "Free Money" showcased her visceral vocal delivery, restless energy and ability to move between fierce rock performance and lyrical introspection.

Throughout her career, Smith has continued to explore the expressive possibilities of rock, drawing on influences ranging from R&B and blues to folk and classic rock. Her music is characterised by its emotional urgency, spiritual undertones and celebration of individuality, freedom and artistic independence. Albums including Radio Ethiopia, Easter and Wave further established her as an influential and enduring musical force, with "Because the Night" becoming one of her best-known songs.

Often associated with the birth of punk, Patti Smith has always existed beyond any single genre. Her influence can be heard across generations of musicians, while her fearless approach to performance and songwriting has secured her place as one of the defining figures in the history of alternative rock.
