Nightingales are a Birmingham-based post-punk band formed in 1979 by frontman Robert Lloyd following the breakup of his previous group, The Prefects. Emerging during the first wave of the UK’s post-punk movement, they became known for their sharp wit, rhythmic complexity and refusal to conform to genre expectations. Alongside Lloyd, the current line-up features Alan Apperley on guitar, Andreas Schmid on bass and Fliss Kitson from Violet Violet on drums.
Long admired by tastemakers such as John Peel and John Robb, The Nightingales have maintained cult status through a prolific and adventurous career. Their music—marked by Lloyd’s sardonic delivery and the band’s angular, propulsive sound—captures the essence of post-punk rebellion with intelligence and humour. Decades on, they continue to tour and release records that challenge and inspire, securing their legacy as one of Britain’s most uncompromising and enduring underground acts.
