Life Without Buildings were a short-lived but highly influential art-punk band from Glasgow, active in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Known for their distinctive sound, the band combined sharp, minimal guitar lines and loose, jazz-influenced rhythms with Sue Tompkins’ urgent, spoken-word vocal delivery. Rather than traditional singing, her stream-of-consciousness style treated lyrics as rhythm and texture, giving the band a sound that felt radical, intimate and ahead of its time.
Their sole studio album, Any Other City (2001), became a cult classic, praised for its raw energy and originality, while the live album Live at the Annandale Hotel (2003) captured the intensity of their performances. Despite their brief existence, Life Without Buildings left a lasting imprint on post-punk and experimental indie music, influencing artists drawn to minimalism, repetition and unconventional vocal approaches. Their legacy continues to grow, defined by fearless creativity and a refusal to follow conventional structures.
