About Joshua Burnside

Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk songwriter, singer and producer from the north of Ireland, raised between the drumlins of Strangford Lough and the narrow alleyways of East Belfast. He builds his songs from Irish traditional music and alternative electronica, threading in found sounds, world-music textures and unorthodox production so the results feel both deeply rooted and restlessly inventive. His writing turns to family, memory and the shifting landscape of a post-conflict home, and it has always followed its own instincts rather than the well-trodden path.

His debut album, Ephrata (2017), won the Northern Ireland Music Prize for Best Album and carried him from home to stages as far afield as Austin's SXSW. In 2025 he released Teeth of Time, chosen as one of BBC 6 Music's Albums of the Year and nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year, Folk Album of the Year at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, and Best Album at the NI Music Prize, with support from the likes of MOJO, Uncut, Songlines and BBC Radio 2. He followed it in 2026 with It's Not Going to Be Okay.
