Birthday brilliance
The best “unknown” singer-songwriter in the world (probably) returned to his home city for a tour finale that would be hard to beat at any time. The strength of James Maddock’s songs and performance guarantee that. And it was his birthday, which added another level.
With the excellent Nick Murphy on percussion, Maddock, now based in New Jersey, delivered a lengthy set of crowd pleasing favourites and new but instantly familiar material. One of the new songs was about an old guitar teacher, Dave Yeomans, who just happened to be sitting near the front. Perfect.
