A great night in spite of the lack of the Primitives support.
I was really going to see the Primitives who were the original support act for this gig but had to pull out due to the ill health of their singer Tracy.
Ex TC were a reasonable replacement and people forget how many hits and great songs XTC have. The new band worked hard along with the original drummer to reproduce most of those 'hits' and 'near misses'.
I wondered how Hugh might manage performing Stranglers songs without keyboards but I needn't have worried ! The excellent bass player simply played the keyboard melody to 'Strange little girl' and we were off ! The drummer was great too and a Doctor apparently ! He was an excellent and charismatic front man and Hugh's own solo songs were excellent and peppered throughout the set along with underrated Stranglers gems like 'Skin deep'. The highlight of the set was undoubtedly the beautiful, 'Always the Sun' which had everyone singing along.
