Enslaved have been reshaping extreme metal since 1991, when teenagers Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson founded the band in Haugesund, Norway. Now based in Bergen, the pair steered Enslaved from raw black metal into something far more expansive, helping to invent Viking metal along the way before folding in the sweep and texture of progressive rock. Across 16 studio albums they have built a catalogue that is both fiercely heavy and restlessly curious, rooted in Norse mythology and a love of the unexpected. Records such as E (2017), Utgard (2020) and Heimdal (2023) have kept them among the genre's most respected names, and they count several Norwegian Grammy awards among their honours.
They are also one of metal's great live acts, and British audiences have seen plenty of them. Enslaved have headlined Damnation Festival and played Bloodstock and ArcTanGent, alongside their own UK headline tours. Expect towering riffs, soaring melody and a real sense of journey from a band who never stand still.
