City of the Sun are the Brooklyn-based instrumental band whose wordless, cinematic music weaves together post-rock, flamenco, Latin folk and blues.
Formed in New York in 2011 and now based in Brooklyn, City of the Sun built their reputation the hard way, busking in the city's subway stations and on its street corners before an invitation to the TED conference in 2013 widened their audience. Founded by guitarist John Pita, whose playing carries his Ecuadorian roots, alongside percussionist Zach Para, the band make entirely instrumental music drawing on post-rock, flamenco, gypsy jazz, indie rock, Latin folk and blues. The result is cinematic and evocative, conjuring a vivid sense of place without a single lyric.
Their debut album, To the Sun and All the Cities in Between (2016), reached number 12 on the Billboard Jazz chart, and was followed by the self-titled City of the Sun (2020) and the EP Segunda Alma (2022). On Under the Moon (2026), produced by the acclaimed Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill), they reach further into desert rock, Mediterranean textures and Latin rhythms, including "Vuela" with singer-songwriter Gizmo Varillas. Having toured with artists such as Peter Bjorn and John and Thievery Corporation, they've earned a devoted following for live shows that feel less like ordinary gigs than shared, immersive experiences.
